Sober Living Homes Explained
Sober Living Houses (SLHs) are safe, substance-free, supportive living facilities for those recovering from substance use disorder. Ideal for those who've just been through inpatient or outpatient treatment, SLHs are supervised environments with rules that support sobriety, such as curfews, shared chores, and therapeutic meetings. Residents are also often trained on life skills and coping skills to make it easier to transition into society. SLHs also provide a strong sense of community that can lead to the kind of deep and lasting connections with other sober individuals that supports a new, healthy lifestyle.
The need for SLHs has been growing and their role in facilitating long term recovery is gaining acceptance. Substance Use Disorder is recognized as a chronic disease requiring long term care. The traditional models of recovery focus more on detoxification and acute treatment , releasing patients from treatment long before they are ready to re-enter society. SLHs provide a safe place for their residents to stay sober while they learn the life skills needed to become functioning citizens. For the best outcome, it is recommended that residents remain in a sober living home for at least 6 months – and longer is better.
A ROOM FOR YOU Recovery Homes
A ROOM FOR YOU homes provide an environment that promotes personal growth and restores dignity and respect through a nurturing community setting. Residents living at A ROOM FOR YOU (ARFY) are required to be actively engaged in recovery. A recovery plan will be discussed with each resident upon entry, and they will be expected to follow their unique plan.
-
The ARFY program requires participation in a 12 Step Program to include meeting attendance and interaction with a sponsor. Residents will be required to attend a designated number of AA or NA meetings per week according to their plan (a private counseling session may replace one of these meetings), and submit to random drug tests to monitor sobriety. The home will provide information on local meeting times and locations, as well as local sober living events. Information on counselors and mental health resources will be provided.
-
Residents are expected to seek employment - information on employment offices and job fairs will be posted, and staff are willing to help. Residents who are not working will be expected to volunteer in the community.
-
There will be a mandatory weekly house meeting to discuss living situations and promote a sense of community. Peer support is a healthy promoter of recovery.
-
Residents are required to adhere to a curfew, assist with chores in the house, and clean up after themselves. They must be courteous to, and respectful of, the other residents of the house, as well as the neighbors.
-
Prescription medications will be allowed for residents who are under a doctor's care. The medications will be held by the house manager and released to the resident as prescribed by the doctor. No over the counter medications are allowed.
